Энэхүү бүтээл нь ОУ-ын санхүүжүүлэгч байгууллага, Засгийн газруудыг шинэ газруудад УЦС барихад нутгийн иргэдтэй зөвшилцөх, иргэдийн саналыг сонсох, байгаль орчин болон нийгмийн үр дагварыг урьдчилж тооцоолох, маш товч ба тодорхой шаардлагуудыг агуулсан бүтээл юм. Coinciding with World Water Day last week, International Rivers, Rivers without Boundaries and Friends of the Earth released a briefing paper on “Protecting Free-Flowing Rivers from Harmful Financing” as part of a publication series articulating key aspects of different No Go Zones outlined in the Banks and Biodiversity initiative.

It is a critical tool for all who are involved in urging the ADB, AIIB, World Bank and other financiers to stop the build out of hydropower projects. Among other main takeaways, the briefing puts forward in clear, concise terms the need for a moratorium on new dams as a key aspect in respecting the rights of communities; urges banks and other financiers to unequivocally respect the free, prior, informed consent of impacted local and Indigenous Peoples’ communities across all transactions and asserts that when banks and financiers upgrade existing hydropower projects, such investments should not perpetuate substantial environmental and social damage, extend the life of ill-conceived dams or result in any expansion of negative impacts from the facility.

SOMO has just  published some important new research and an exciting story visualization with insightful infographics on the “battery boom” currently taking place around the globe. The story raises serious questions about the extent of mineral consumption, where these resources come from and, crucially, who consumes them. We hope the report helps influence the debate around the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) and encourages the reduction of mineral consumption by moving away from car dependency towards active and shared transport and fewer and smaller cars. We’ve put in a session proposal to the OECD on this for the upcoming OECD Responsible Minerals Forum.
